Welcome to Beaver Island

Michigan’s Emerald Isle — Where Nature, History, and Hospitality Meet

Tucked away in the sparkling blue waters of northern Lake Michigan lies Beaver Island, the largest island in the lake and one of Michigan’s best-kept secrets. With a rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and a warm, welcoming community, Beaver Island is a destination like no other. Whether you’re arriving for a weekend getaway, a summer retreat, or your first ferry ride across the water, we’re thrilled to welcome you to this unique corner of the world.

Start at the Heart: The Beaver Island Community Center

When you arrive on Beaver Island, your first stop should be the Beaver Island Community Center (BICC), located just steps from the ferry dock in downtown St. James. The BICC is more than a building — it’s a hub for information, entertainment, and community life. Inside, you’ll find:

  • Visitor information desk with brochures, maps, ferry schedules, and personal recommendations
  • Public restrooms and Wi-Fi
  • Gift shop featuring island-made goods and souvenirs
  • Jeanne Howell Theater for live performances, movies, and cultural programs
  • Outdoor seating and free charging stations

Our friendly staff and volunteers are happy to answer questions, offer local tips, and help you make the most of your time on the island.

  • Island Airways: Year-round flights from Charlevoix Municipal Airport (about 20 minutes). Flights run daily and can carry both passengers and light cargo.

Advance reservations are recommended for both options, especially in summer.

Helpful Tips for First-Time Visitors

  • Cash & Card: Most businesses accept credit cards, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases or tips.
  • Cell Service: Coverage can be spotty in remote areas. Wi-Fi is available at the Community Center and most accommodations.
  • Leave No Trace: Help keep our island clean and beautiful. Please pack out trash, stay on trails, and respect wildlife.
  • Be Patient: Island time is real. Things move a little slower here — and that’s part of the charm.
